BLAIRS PRE-RETIREMENT PROGRAMME - (BPRP)

We want all Blairs’ employees to enjoy a long and happy retirement because we believe by the time you reach retirement age you will have earned it. To help you enjoy your retirement we have created the Blairs Pre-Retirement Programme (BPRP).

What is retirement?

An Australian insurance companied carried out a survey of people who were within 20 years of retirement and asked them the question “what will retirement mean for you?” They were surprised at the responses.

  • 11 per cent said they wanted to rebel
  • 24 per cent wanted to reinvent their lives
  • 25 per cent wanted to relax
  • 40 per cent wanted to rediscover themselves

Clearly retirement isn’t the end of anything in fact most people believe it’s the start of something new. It is interesting that only one in four respondents felt they wanted to relax while everybody else decided there was still plenty they wanted to do with their lives.

While retirement means different things to different people, one aspect common to everyone is that whatever you intend doing you will have all day every day to do it. The average life expectancy in Scotland is around 80 years so it is sensible to make plans to allow you to make the most of your retirement. If you plan for your retirement you will enjoy it more AND you will probably live longer.

So what is BPRP?

BPRP is a programme fully funded by Blairs Ltd which starts 2 years before the date of your retirement and BPRP will help you to appreciate all aspects of life in retirement. Initially you will have a half day paid leave per week to attend seminars and courses and this will increase to two paid days per week during the last six months of your employment.

Through BPRP you will have expert advice on your finances, training on IT, email and internet, advice on health, diet and fitness and the opportunity to learn new skills or hobbies to pursue during your retirement.

To help you gain as much as possible from the BPRP we have developed a unique credits accumulation scheme, to reflect your involvement with a range of educational, recreational, social and voluntary activities of your choice.

Successful attendance and completion of courses and seminars will attract a certain number of credits and these will be documented in your Personal Record of Achievement. This will also help you to focus on those aspects of the BPRP which will bring real value to you in your retirement. We expect everyone to approach BPRP in a structured way and to bring a high degree of commitment to the scheme and on satisfactory conclusion you will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Support will be provided from the course administrator in terms of booking events that you wish to attend and a senior colleague will guide you through your personal record of achievement via regular meetings, which will include your feedback on what activities you’ve undertaken. This feedback will be used to improve and to develop the BPRP.
