The Centre for Engineering Education and Development

Over the last couple of years a small group of industrialists and academics in Scotland have been exploring the benefits of businesses working together in clusters to identify and facilitate technical enhancements that can significantly improve their individual business performance. Pilot projects ranged from new R & D projects to more incremental but still significant product and process enhancements. Improved and more efficient training mechanisms have also been explored.

The experience of those participatiing reinforced their conviction of the business value of cross-sectoral cluster interaction, with academic participation. As a consequence CeeD has been established to implement this solution. Clustering has been shown to be successful in many settings internationally. The CeeD approach utilises a bottom-up philosophy, driven by its members, with a strategy geared to the circumstances of companies in today's Scotland.

In addition, council funding support has been received from East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde as well as matched funding from ERDF. As its development progresses, CeeD will widen the geographic areas of its activities embracing further academic and business partners.

ACTIVITIES

CeeD takes a broad view of Engineering: it is to do with applying knowledge usefully. It sets no artificial boundaries to limit its activities. Within each cluster, individual key business enhancement issues are identified, and routes to addressing these reviewed. CeeD will then act, beyond the cluster as appropriate, to facilitate the partnership interaction to derive an efficient and advantageous solution.
